How to find Frisco Marriage Counseling

Frisco, Texas is a beautiful, dynamic city that is growing quickly! Between the Star, the PGA course, and the Universal Studios coming to Frisco, there is a lot to love in Frisco. Even though there is growth, and more dining options than you could ever sample in a lifetime, that doesn't mean that your relationship is also growing and changing in the ways you are hoping for. If you are looking for a Frisco marriage counselor or sex therapist– I’d love to help you find someone who can help.

I want to help you find Frisco marriage counseling

It can be difficult when your relationship is struggling. When you aren’t feeling seen, and feeling supported by your partner, everything can feel more challenging. And finding the RIGHT couples counselor can feel difficult and overwhelming!

Qualities to Look for in a Frisco Marriage Counselor

Fit between the couple and therapist:

I tell potential clients that the fit between the therapist and client(s) is the most important factor when choosing a couples therapist. You need to feel that they can understand what is important to you, and why working on your relationship is so important (and difficult!)

When I have consultations with potential new clients I ask about their past counseling experience, and have noticed that while finding an individual therapist is like dating, finding a marriage therapist is like finding couples’ friends– you BOTH need to feel connected to the therapist and feel they have your best interests in mind.

Therapists experienced with couples:

Marriage counseling is HARD! It’s tough to balance two very different viewpoints. Any Frisco marriage counselor you choose should have extensive experience specifically with couples. They should be trained to see how the individuals in any relationship can affect each other, and how that creates gridlock and stuckness.

An individual counselor who also sees couples may not have the skill set to navigate the unique challenges associated with having two people with different wants, needs, and desires in front of them.

As a couples counselor in Frisco, I love working with couples! Marriage counseling is my jam, and it's what I have chosen to specialize in! I love helping couples move from feeling discouraged and hopeless about their relationship to being hopeful and reviving their relationship!

Training and Certifications:

All therapists, counselors, and mental health professionals should continue to receive specialized training in their specific niche. You want to find a therapist who LOVES to work with couples! (Believe me, not all do. Some therapists feel the same way about working as a couples counselor as I would being a play therapist! Thank you, but no thanks!)

There are multiple trainings and certifications for couples therapists, including EFT, Gottman, Developmental model, and Imago. They are all successful in helping couples learn to improve their relationship and communication. It may not be as important what specific training a therapist has, as that they have specialized in working with couples.

I am trained in the Developmental model, which combines the best aspects of emotionally focused therapy and differentiation, meaning I focus on balancing the need for both closeness and autonomy in your relationship.

In addition, I am an AASECT-certified sex therapist (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists— the gold standard of sex therapy certification) as well as hold a certificate in sexual health from the University of Michigan. I love working with couples around issues like communication, desire discrepancies, and other sexual challenges.
