Helping You Reconnect, Communicate, and Actually Like Each Other Again

You didn’t think your relationship would feel this hard.
You love each other, but lately, it feels like you’re stuck in a loop of distance, stress, or silence. You miss the connection, the fun, and the feeling of being on the same team.

Right now, you’re just trying to keep it all together. Careers, kids, laundry, logistics: and the relationship has taken a back seat. You’re starting to feel more like roommates than romantic partners.

Conversations feel tense or surface-level.
Little things lead to big fights or worse, long stretches of cold silence.
Sex is inconsistent (or nonexistent), and even when you try to reconnect, it doesn’t seem to land.

You're tired of pretending everything’s fine when it’s not.
And honestly? You’re scared of where this is headed if nothing changes.

Couples Therapy That Actually Helps You Make Real Changes

I help couples move from stuck, disconnected, and frustrated to connected, clear, and hopeful.

No blaming. No finger-pointing. No fluff. Just real, meaningful progress.

Marina Stanton wearing a blue dress with a warm smile

Hi! I’m Marina!

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, and I work exclusively with couples. This isn’t just one thing I do: it’s the thing I do.

I specialize in helping motivated couples understand the patterns that keep them stuck, communicate more effectively, and rebuild intimacy emotionally, physically, and sexually.

My approach is grounded in the Developmental Model, which blends differentiation and attachment theory to help each partner grow as an individual and as part of a stronger relationship. I also draw from EFT, Gottman Method, and other evidence-based approaches depending on your needs.

I’m irreverent, direct, and full of analogies. I use humor and visuals to make complex ideas click.
I also believe therapy should be practical. You’ll get tools, insight, and homework that helps you apply what we talk about in real life.

What You Can Expect in Couples Counseling

  • A clearer understanding of the cycle keeping you stuck

  • Support identifying how your past shows up in your present

  • Help taking individual responsibility without falling into blame

  • New skills for managing conflict, communicating clearly, and reconnecting intimately

  • Weekly sessions and between-session assignments to accelerate your progress

I work best with couples who want to grow, not just repair damage.
My favorite clients are willing to reflect, take ownership, and show up, even when it’s uncomfortable.

  • Desire discrepancies or sexual disconnect

  • Differences in parenting, energy levels, or money habits

  • Religious or faith transitions within the relationship

  • Feeling more like co-parents or business partners than lovers

  • A general loss of connection, affection, or fun

If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the right place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Counseling

  • Couples counseling, also called marriage therapy or relationship counseling, is a type of psychotherapy that helps partners understand each other better, improve communication, and strengthen their emotional and sexual connection. In my work with couples, we don’t just put out fires—we get underneath the patterns that fuel them. Using a developmental and systems-based lens, we explore how each partner contributes to the dynamic and work toward creating a more balanced, connected relationship. Whether you're dealing with conflict, disconnection, desire discrepancies, or simply feeling like roommates instead of romantic partners, couples therapy can help you get unstuck and move forward with clarity and hope.

  • Not at all. In fact, some of the best outcomes happen when couples come in before things reach a crisis point. Couples counseling is for anyone who wants to improve communication, navigate life transitions, or deepen emotional and physical intimacy. If you're feeling more distant than you'd like, arguing more frequently, or struggling with mismatched desires or values, therapy can help you address those issues proactively. Think of couples therapy not as a last resort, but as relationship maintenance—like a tune-up for your connection.

  • I don’t play referee, and I won’t pick sides. My role is to help you both understand the patterns that keep you stuck and take ownership of your part in those patterns. Couples therapy isn’t about who’s right or wrong—it’s about how you're interacting, why those dynamics exist, and what each of you can do to shift them. I’ll challenge both of you (with compassion) and guide you toward insight and practical tools to create change. The goal is for you both to feel heard, respected, and empowered in the relationship.

  • I work with committed couples who are motivated to do the work, whether they’re dating, engaged, married, or somewhere in between. Many of my clients are navigating big transitions like becoming parents, rediscovering intimacy after years of disconnection, or managing religious or spiritual changes within the relationship. I especially enjoy working with couples who are dealing with desire discrepancies or who are ready to shift long-standing communication patterns. I don’t typically work with affair recovery, so if infidelity is the primary issue, I can help you find a referral who specializes in that area.

  • I use the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, which integrates attachment theory with differentiation—the ability to stay connected while being true to yourself. I also incorporate tools from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and other evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to your unique dynamic. I’m known for being direct, down-to-earth, and warm. I use humor, visuals, and metaphors to make complex ideas digestible, and I offer structure through homework and between-session practices to keep you moving forward. Therapy with me is a mix of insight, skills-building, and accountability.

  • There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but most couples I work with start to notice meaningful shifts within the first few months. The length of therapy depends on the depth of the issues, your goals, and how much effort you're both putting in between sessions. Some couples come in for short-term support around a specific issue, while others commit to longer-term work to rebuild trust, reignite intimacy, or create a more solid foundation for the future. My goal is always to work myself out of a job by equipping you with the tools you need to succeed long after therapy ends.

  • Yes, absolutely. As a certified sex therapist, I specialize in working with couples struggling with low desire, mismatched libidos, or emotional disconnection that impacts physical intimacy.

I’m trained to talk about sex in a way that’s respectful, direct, and shame-free—so we can get to the root of the issue without awkwardness or judgment.

Whether you’re newly navigating a desire difference or haven’t had a satisfying sex life in years, therapy can help you rebuild trust, intimacy, and pleasure in your relationship.

  • I offer both! I see clients in person at my Centennial, Colorado office, which serves couples in the greater Denver area. I also provide online couples counseling for clients across Colorado, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

Online therapy allows couples to access specialized support from the comfort of home while maintaining the same level of depth and effectiveness.

Whether in-person or online, you’ll receive high-quality care that’s tailored to your unique relationship dynamic.

  • Finding the right therapist for couples counseling in Denver can be challenging. You’re looking for more than someone to listen—you want a skilled guide who knows how to navigate conflict, rebuild connection, and help both partners feel heard. Look for a licensed marriage and family therapist or sex therapist who specializes in couples work and uses a structured, evidence-based approach.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist, I offer couples counseling in Denver (at my Centennial office) and online for those who prefer virtual sessions. My approach is direct, compassionate, and grounded in the realities of long-term relationships.

  • Yes! You don’t need to live in Denver to access quality couples counseling. I’m licensed to work with couples across Colorado, Texas, Utah, and Washington through secure online therapy. Whether you're in a rural area or just prefer the flexibility of meeting from home—or even your car—I offer online couples counseling that fits your life while still getting to the heart of what’s going on in your relationship.

I’m here to help you rekindle that spark: learn to communicate better, learn to like each other again and learn to revive your relationship.
